Deadpool 2 star Zazie Beetz, who is portraying the role of the mutant mercenary Domino, has opened up about the incident that happened last summer on the sets of the untitled Deadpool Sequel in Vancouver. It was the death of stuntwoman Joi “SJ” Harris that shocked everyone on the film sets.
Harris, who was working as a stunt driver for the first time, was hired to perform as stunt-double for the character Domino, played by Beetz. She died on August 14, 2017, after her stunt involving a motorcycle went wrong.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Beetz described how Harris’ accident affected them.
“It was her first day on set and nobody really knows what happened,” Beetz said. “People were very, very affected by it — especially the stunt team, whom I’d worked a lot with. They were very upset by it because they want to protect the people that they’re working with. And in this case, that didn’t happen. It was a really sad time.”
Although Beetz never met Harris in person, she hopes that the first African-American female professional road racer stuntwoman will be remembered as the pioneer.
“I felt like she was part of the Domino team and story,” the Atlanta actress added. “I hope people continue to remember her as someone who really pushed a lot of boundaries — being the first black woman to be professionally engaged in motorcycle racing. I hope that’s her legacy.”
Talking more about Deadpool 2, promotional standees for the Deadpool sequel has already been sent to a lot of movie theaters in North America. The standees feature Deadpool posing with a giant letter “D,” with a caption that reads, “It’s Bigger.” You can check out the picture of the promotional standees below.
Domino is also expected to reprise her character in X-Force which was recently reportedly revealed to be all set to start filming in October. but it is yet to be confirmed by the studio.
Directed by David Leitch, Deadpool 2 stars Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, and Morena Baccarin in the lead roles. The film is scheduled to land in theatres on May 18, 2018.
