It seems reconciliation might be on the cards between Disney and director James Gunn as rumors are rife that the film studio is meeting with Gunn on the matter. The Guardians of the Galaxy director was fired earlier this month when some of his old offensive tweets on controversial topics such as pedophilia, rape, the Holocaust, 9/11 and AIDS resurfaced by far-right conservative sites and theorists.
According to a tweet by The DisInsider editor-in-chief Skyler Shuler, Disney is just taking its own ample time to sense the situation before sitting down with Gunn and potentially hiring him again to helm Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The fact that the filmmaking company didn’t show any hurry in finding a replacement for the upcoming GOTG movie is also a big sign that it is planning to reverse the decision.
The fan-favorite director does have a lot of support coming from his Hollywood peers and fans. Earlier this week, the Guardians of the Galaxy cast members jointly released a statement showing their support for Gunn’s reinstatement. The statement was signed by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper.
Not only Hollywood celebrities, but fans have also started a Change.org online petition calling out Disney and Marvel to rehire James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. At the time of writing, the petition has already got more than 357,000 signatures.
It should be noted that the studio meeting Gunn doesn’t necessarily imply that they will rehire Gunn for Guardians of the Galaxy 3, nor does it mean Gunn himself would want to return. it’s better to wait patiently until any confirmation. What will be the outcome of the meeting remains to be seen.
