Even after two weeks of release, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther is still reigning the box office worldwide. With this year’s Academy Awards just got over, Disney has already started making huge plans to campaign Black Panther for next year’s Academy Awards.
Dunkirk director Christopher Nolan also thinks that Black Panther will undoubtedly make it to Academy Awards 2019 nominations. During an interview with Deadline at the Governors Ball after-party, Nolan predicted that Black Panther will definitely be one of the Best Picture nominees in 2019.
The reason that the Academy Awards now puts 10 films forward for the Best Picture nomination instead of the previously set five film standard is because of Nolan’s The Dark Knight getting excluded for Best Picture in the year 2009. In 2009, the Best Picture Oscar went to Slumdog Millionaire, and Heath Ledger won posthumously for Best Actor In A Supporting Role for Dark Knight.
If Black Panther does get nominated for Best Picture then it would be the first comic book movie to get the achievement as superhero movies usually get nominated in categories such as Visual Effects or Sound Editing, they are rarely considered for the prestigious awards.
The last time a superhero movie won an Academy Award was in 2017 when Suicide Squad won the Best Makeup and Hairstyling award, which was given to Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini, and Christopher Nelson.
A Disney executive has confirmed that other than Black Panther they will also be campaigning for director Rob Marshall’s Mary Poppins Returns.
Though the MCU film wasn’t eligible to participate in this years’ Academy Awards, the movie was still spotlighted during the opening monologue.
Talking more about the first black superhero film, Black Panther has earned $909.8M at the global box office through Monday. The film has already surpassed Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2, Thor: Ragnarok, Batman Vs Superman, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man 3 in terms of worldwide box office collections. The film now aims to hit the $1B mark by next weekend.
