Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin has reportedly teamed up with Warner Bros. to develop his first family-friendly animated film based on his 1980’s children fantasy novel, The Ice Dragon. Martin will be producing the film, while his manager Vince Gerardis will serve as the executive producer. Warner Bros. Animation Group chiefs Allison Abbate and Chris Leahy are overseeing the project for the studio. The news of the adaptation movie was first reported by Deadline.
Martin wrote The Ice Dragon before Game of Thrones, so, the story is not set in the Seven Kingdoms. It is set in a medieval fantasy world where warring kingdoms used fire-breathing dragons to battle each other. The story follows a young girl named Adara, who secretly befriends a feared and mythic Ice Dragon. It is when an invading army of dragons invades Adara’s city that the same Ice Dragon comes forward to save her city from utter destruction.
The Ice Dragon animated film does not yet have a release date.
In other news, Martin confirmed earlier this year that the long-awaited sixth novel in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, titled The Winds of Winter, will not get released in 2018 as expected earlier. However, he has confirmed that a new book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series will be released later this year on November 20th.
Notably, ever since HBO’s Game of Thrones became extremely popular among audiences, the film and television rights for Martin’s other book’s have been in high demand. The rights to the author’s sci-fi supernatural thriller Nightflyers has already been acquired by Syfy. The Nightflyers television series is scheduled to debut sometime later this year. Talking about Game of Thrones, the HBO series will wrap up its final season next year.
