Warner Bros. is reportedly working on to re-launch the iconic sci-fi franchise, The Matrix. It would definitely be a wise decision to do so considering the fact that the original trilogy grossed around $1.8 billion worldwide. In fact, the first Matrix movie is considered as one of the greatest action movies of all-time for its special effects and mind-bending plot. Two sequels of the film have been released since then titled The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.
It is reported that Warner Bros. has roped in ‘X2: X-Men United’ screenwriter Zak Penn to write the treatment and script for the next Matrix film, while Michael B. Jordan is being considered to play the lead role.
Screen Rant had the opportunity to talk to screenwriter Zak Penn who revealed that that the new movie would not be a reboot or a remake of the original series. While promoting Ready Player One in the interview, Penn offered some update on what he has planned for the next Matrix film.
“I’ve been working on Matrix right now. Which is in…a phase right now,” Penn said. “That’s a franchise I desperately want to see brought back and, I can’t go in to too much detail, but I’ve been harassing Warner Bros. for years to try to get it going again so that’s one thing I’m working on and I’ve been working on a bunch of other things too.”
It is expected that Penn will explore a different corner of the universe found in the Wachowskis’ movies, thereby expanding the series into a possible shared universe. He went ahead addressing the similarities between his soon-to-be-released film Ready Player One and the upcoming Matrix film and their virtual worlds.
“I think OASIS (the virtual space in Ready Player One) is similar,” Penn added. “Both the Matrix and OASIS are similar in that they are brilliant ideas for universes… When it came out about Matrix, people were like ‘Oh no, there going to reboot Matrix’ I was like, Why, I’m not insane. I mean, The Matrix is still one of my favorite…they’d re-release The Matrix and people would go see it.”
Notably, Penn also recently took to Twitter to talk about what he wants to see in the next Matrix film. You can check out his tweets below.

All I can say at this point is no one could or should REBOOT the Matrix. People who know Animatrix and the comics understand.

Can't comment yet except to say that the words "reboot" and "remake" were from an article. Let's stop responding to inaccurate news.

If I were going to recast Keanu Reeves, I would cast Keanu Reeves.

How about just re-release the matrix? Don't reboot it, you can't do better.

Do I want to see more stories set in the universe of the matrix? Yes. Because it's a brilliant idea that generates great stories.
