A die-hard Star Wars fan has created an alternate Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening sequence using J. J. Abrams’s original storyboards. Abrams relaunched the Star Wars franchise in 2015. Notably, Abrams had a very different opening sequence for the film in mind and he even created a storyboard for it. Now, a Star Wars fan has used the input from the storyboards to create an alternate opening shot.
“The original concept for the force awakens opening was very different to what finally made it to screen. Using the original storyboards by J.J.Abrams, I have attempted to capture what this could have looked like,” the description for the YouTube video read.
YouTube user Tim Gray has created the alternate Star Wars: The Force Awakens sequence that you can watch below. The video teases a very different version of the desert planet Jakku. It became the site of the final battle between the New Republic and the Empire in the official Star Wars canon. After the battle, the arid planet got littered with the wrecks of Imperial Star Destroyer and Republic capital ships. The people living on Jakku traded the wrecks and exchanged the metal junk for anything of value.
Abrams originally visioned Jakku as a sparsely inhabited cosmic junkyard. The planet which is used as a dumping ground for non-repairable vessels and wreckage which were the result of the great space battles fought in inhabited star-systems.
Wreckage from space battles and vessels as huge as an Imperial Star Destroyer might get caught in the planet’s gravitational pull, and come crashing down as meteors. So, the New Republic decides to dump the destroyed space crafts and ships on the planet Jakku.
If you can recall, there was a hint of the original concept in The Force Awakens. It is when Han comes to find out that Falcon is at Jakku that he calls the planet a junkyard.
It was for good that this original opening sequence was not used in the film as it definitely lacks the drama expected out an actual opening sequence. In fact, this sequence conveys a very different message about the film. While this sequence opens with the message that the Empire has been destroyed, the final version of The Force Awakens began with a much more effective scene showcasing that the threat of the Empire has been reborn.
